Reader Feedback

Hi,

I just wanted to thank you for the advice on the system health reporting tool. I was able to use it and find a couple of hardware problems that saved me a good deal of time and frustration! Please keep bringing us more of these tips.

Don't forget!  Low Memory Problems

Poor system performance? Low memory or out of memory notifications from Windows? Display problems? If you are experiencing any or all of these, chances are your computer is suffering from low memory problems.

Low memory problems occur when your computer runs out of RAM and becomes low on virtual memory. RAM (Random access memory) is the place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor. The size of RAM varies from machine to machine. If there is not enough RAM, then windows uses virtual memory. Virtual memory moves information to the hard drive in a file called a paging file. When both become low in memory then you can start to experience performance problems.

Microsoft has outlined many ways to prevent low memory problems.

Spyware - how did that get here?

This is a follow up to a spyware article that was previously released. http://www.raxco.com/new/newsletters/healthyPC_vol01-iss12.html

The first article defined spyware and showed programs that can remove it. This article discusses where spyware comes from and ways to identify if you have spyware installed.

Spyware may be found bundled inside of shareware or freeware applications. To protect the shareware or freeware programs, the supplier usually inserts a small line in the end user license agreement showing that they will be installing "other software". Be sure to scan the license agreement to ensure that there is nothing "extra" being installed. Spyware can also come in free versions of normally licensed applications.

Another way is through peer-to-peer (P2P) and other file sharing programs. Some applications that are known to include Spyware are: CoolWebSearch, Gator, SaveNow, BargainBuddy, NewDotNet, HuntBar, HotBar, Bonzai Buddy, Morpheus, WebHancer, WinMX, Zlob and Wild Tangent.

Most machines show signs of having spyware installed. Of course, there are machines that show no symptoms at all, but most do. You can tell that you have spyware installed when you notice new toolbars that you did not install, your home page or search program changes, you type the address of a website but you are taken to an unrelated website, you see pop-up ads even if you are not connected to the internet, or your computer suddenly starts running more slowly than it normally does.

Remember there are plenty of anti-spyware programs to combat spyware such as Ad-Aware 2008 or Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6. You can find a list or spyware removal programs here:
